[High a top Dublin on the 5th floor in the Guinness factory sharing our first Guinness' in Dublin after finishing the Guinness story tour - was fantastic ]
Ok Dublin, we get you. We get you completely. We get your music, your traditional food, your gorgeous people, but most of all we get your fantastic vibe. Arriving in to Dublin our first night quite late we had some serious doubts about the city. We were peaking out our dark bus window staring at Indian & Chinese restaurants every few metres and shops with bars on the front of them - but take our advice, don't let that fool you. Once we had started to explore and discover the real Dublin the next day after pushing our initial impressions far out of our minds we fell in love. We got it. The streets are full of talented buskers, fresh flowers and there were traditional Irish pubs serving up delicious Irish food every 2nd shop - our kind of city. That wasn't the best part though - the best part really was the vibe. But here's where it gets tricky, because vibes are hard to describe, but Dublin was full of it. Walking the streets you felt it, eating in pubs you felt it, and sitting in the sun drinking coffee watching passer by's - you felt it. There was nothing that particularly stuck out for us as a highlight, nor was there anything major that we did that 'made' this section of the trip, it was just all of Dublin's little quirks, people, accents and food that made our experience a fun and memorable one. Here is how we did our Dublin experience over 4 days that hopefully can inspire you to put this gorgeous city on your own travel map.
What we did with our 4 days..& highly recommend
l St Patrick's Cathedral
l Double decker 'Green' bus tour (don't do the Red bus tour in Dublin - do the Green one!!)
l Trinity College - & seeing the original book of Kell
l Guinness Storehouse
l Temple Bar (cultural area of Dublin)
l Pub Crawl with 30 other amazing travelers
l Trained out to 'country Ireland' for a day - to Wicklow.
l Ate in as many traditional Irish pubs and ate as many traditional Irish dishes as possible.
l Visited the pub from the movie p.s I love you (ok so this was totally an Anna thing but I have I.O.U'd Morgs 1 tourist attraction of his choice that I don't want to do)
Highlights: All of it!!
l Double decker 'green' tour bus - We are finding the best way to see any city is to do this kind of tour if it's on offer. Naturally Dublin's was a stand out! Our bus driver gave hilarious live commentary the whole tour and even had us singing Irish jigs by the end of it. It's hop on hop off so we did the whole city this way.... Brilliant.
l Walking everywhere and anywhere as much as we humanly could - this helped with gel'ing with the vibe.
l The Guinness factory!! So fantastic and amazing to learn about how it is actually made, hear the history of it all - and of course, drink your free pint at the end of the tour on the top floor of the place overlooking all of Dublin. P.s did you know that Arthur Guinness, the founder of the famous brew initially hired the brewery with a 9,000 year lease, he believed he was on to something that much. He also had 21 kids with his wife he adored - so turns out beer & sex really do mix well!!
l The pub crawl - we had such a great time mixing with other like minded travelers, getting taken to proper traditional pubs, holes in the walls if you will & mixing with local Irish people who were as friendly as anything.
l The music - we cannot say how much we really loved sitting in an Irish pub, with live music playing away, violins, Irish guitars, the lot- it was just magic. It was exactly like in the movies...only cooler.
l Visiting Trinity College's old library - this is where the original book of Kell is kept. We felt like we'd stepped back to a time of vikings & raw history being in the exhibition with the stories of how the book came to be. What was even more amazing was then visiting the old library on the top floor. I was literally speechless. You aren't allowed to take photos (which we actually liked as it left you to just absorb the experience) but nothing would have done it justice anyway. It was floor to high ceiling filled with books older than our grandparents grandparents...grandparents. A breathtaking experience.
l Exploring all the off beaten ally ways - I don't think Morgs & I left one un explored. We found the best tiny holes in the walls for coffee, food & live music down all the many many ally ways Dublin had to offer. If we saw an ally way - we were down it. It's where a lot of the locals eat and drink as well so a) you get to listen to their gorgeous accents, but b) you're obviously on to something good!!
l Training to Wicklow - we decided to get out of Dublin for a day to see the 'real' countryside of Ireland and caught the train to Wicklow, which is an hour out of Dublin. We tossed up between Cork & Wicklow but Cork was 3 hours by train & Wicklow was only 1 hour by train. Wicklow is also dubbed 'the garden of Ireland' - & we can assure you it did not disappoint. It is the real deal kind of country style town and we spent hours climbing hills for views, strolling cobble stone streets & old buildings and sitting in the sun eating sweets & drinking coffee watching the world go by. It was a 10/10 kind of day.
Memorable Quotes ..
Sooo Morgs was on fire this particular leg of the trip (although when is he not) however most of the hilarious things he said that had me bent over laughing for minutes on end are not post worthy (with family reading!) But here are still some good'un's that made us laugh.
l "pfft hunny, listen to those Frenchies in front of us fighting, clearly they can't handle their Guinness" - Morgan (said walking out of Guinness storehouse with a French couple fighting in front of us)
l Morgan: "Come on let's go back to our hotel'.
Anna: "Hostel you mean"
Morgan: "Nope, I'm calling it a hotel, the only difference anyway is an s right?"
Anna: "that...and bunk beds, shared bathrooms and STI's"
(said walking back to our hostel trying to make our accommodation sound & feel
Fancier than it really was).
PS: I love you is one of my favourite movies and you are so lucky to see and experience Ireland on your own skin :) I would also like to see the book of Kell. I studied Art so you probably understand. Quotes are hilarieous again ;)
